Looking for Fellow Apprentices
If you or someone you know is interested in becoming an apprentice to one of Saint Helena's most prolific oystermen, please email us at gullahmanoysterandseafood@gmail.com.
We are currently recruiting apprentices to assist with Gullah Man Oyster’s Oyster Relay and Economic Development Project. This unique opportunity offers hands-on experience in oyster farming, relay techniques, and actively contributes to the growth of the local economy.
Apprentices will have the chance to develop valuable skills in aquaculture, environmental stewardship, and business development, while playing a vital role in sustaining the oyster industry and supporting important community initiatives.
Ideal candidates should be highly committed, eager to learn, and genuinely passionate about preserving Gullah culture and tradition through sustainable and responsible practices.
Gullah Man Oysters Receives $100K Grant from Pew Charitable Trust
We’re proud to announce that Gullah Man Oysters has been awarded a $100,000 grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts to lead a groundbreaking new project:
Gullah Man Oysters: Revitalizing Oyster Beds and Advancing Shellfish Aquaculture.
This isn’t just a project—it’s a movement. Here’s what we’re doing:
Empowering local Gullah/Geechee workers with hands-on training in oyster leasing, harvesting, restoration, and maritime licensing.
Reviving oyster beds in the Harbor River through sustainable relay practices—moving oysters from overcrowded areas to healthier habitats.
Monitoring water quality with support from NOAA and NCCOS to ensure long-term environmental success.
Engaging the community through oyster workshops, seafood roasts, and cultural education rooted in Gullah foodways and traditions.
Bringing our story to national platforms like the Triennial Aquaculture Conference and Oyster South Symposium, advocating for inclusion in the aquaculture industry.
