Gullah Man Oysters Receives $100K Grant from Pew Charitable Trust

We’re proud to announce that Gullah Man Oysters has been awarded a $100,000 grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts to lead a groundbreaking new project:

Gullah Man Oysters: Revitalizing Oyster Beds and Advancing Shellfish Aquaculture.

This isn’t just a project—it’s a movement. Here’s what we’re doing:

  • Empowering local Gullah/Geechee workers with hands-on training in oyster leasing, harvesting, restoration, and maritime licensing.

  • Reviving oyster beds in the Harbor River through sustainable relay practices—moving oysters from overcrowded areas to healthier habitats.

  • Monitoring water quality with support from NOAA and NCCOS to ensure long-term environmental success.

  • Engaging the community through oyster workshops, seafood roasts, and cultural education rooted in Gullah foodways and traditions.

  • Bringing our story to national platforms like the Triennial Aquaculture Conference and Oyster South Symposium, advocating for inclusion in the aquaculture industry.
